Terry St. John (1934–2020) was born in Sacramento, California and later raised in Berkeley. He completed a BA at the University of California, Berkeley in 1958, then went on to earn his MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1966.
Early in his career he worked closely with decorators of space and nature — inspired by the likes of Richard Diebenkorn and James Weeks — and began his practice in figure drawing and landscapes rooted in direct observation.
From 1970 to 1990 he served as Curator of Modern Painting at the Oakland Museum of California, where he organised significant shows and helped shape the West-Coast modern art narrative. After that, he chaired the Art Department at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont for six years.
As a painter, St. John worked fluidly between figure, landscape, and still life. His characteristic style combines bold colour, expressive impasto, and a keen sensitivity to light and space. Reviews describe him as an elder statesman of Bay Area figurative and landscape painting, whose work places him in the lineage of the Bay Area Figurative school.
His work is included in major California collections such as the de Young Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Oakland Museum of California, and the Crocker Art Museum.
In recent years he divided his time between California and a studio in Chiang Mai, Thailand, exploring light and form in new environments. His later works reflect this dual geography and continued evolution.
